Responsibilities

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a bi-state public agency operating some of the busiest and most important transportation links in the New York/New Jersey region.

Port Authority architects work on a wide range of projects within the general context of transportation and infrastructure.  The airports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, and bus and rail terminals form important transportation links in the region.  Whether working on a major public project such as an airport terminal rehabilitation, or a support structure such as a firefighting facility, the in-house architectural team is committed to quality and efficiency to serve the design needs of the agency.  The architectural unit is part of a multi-discipline group of engineers and other design professionals that form the Engineering Department of the agency.

The Port Authority is seeking to fill a position of Designer (Physical Model Specialty) in the Engineering Department’s Design Division.  As a Designer, working under the supervision of a Principal Architect, and as part of a project team, you will be responsible to produce the quality design services required for the successful delivery of the capital and operating program’s complex construction projects.

You will ensure model-making services meet quality standards as follows:

1. Convert 2D and 3D graphics for compatibility with 3D Printer
2. Produce physical models for the various projects in various media
3. Coordinate with Architectural Staff designs and physical model development
4. Transport models to Line Department offices and other locations

Other responsibilities include the role of model shop manager.  In this role, you will be responsible to:

1. 1. Supervise Model Shop staff, including on-site and outside consultants 
   2. Manage model shop and maintain equipment
   3. Organize work flow/load and coordinate with Project Architect/Task Leaders to meet schedule and budget
   4. Utilize appropriate methods and systems of communication with supervisors, team members, and others within and outside the department and agency.

You may also be required to provide project support using drafting skills, according to the Authority’s CADD and/or BIM standards.

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

• High school degree or equivalency. 
• Valid driver license 
• 15 years minimum experience in all forms of architectural model making, including expertise in:
  • Woodworking power tools, not limited to band saw, table saw, drill press
  • Cutting, sanding, and adhering rigid board materials and plexi glass
  • Spray painting and other related finishing techniques
  • 3-D computer model printing using ZCorp machines, laser cutting, and other computer model-making techniques
• Demonstrated problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, as well as the demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, independent, and function in a team environment.
• Superior oral and written communication skills are required; demonstrated presentation skills are desirable.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and AutoCAD Architectural Desktop in its most recent release. 

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

• A four- year accredited college degree in an art-related program. 
• Knowledge of Rhino, Sketch-Up, and Revit in their most recent release.
