Responsibilities

The Port Authority offers paid summer internships to students that provide the opportunity to work with knowledgeable and experienced professionals on assignments critical to operating, maintaining, and expanding the transportation infrastructure for one of the greatest economies in the world.

Assignments include hands-on projects to cultivate technical, writing, communication and team-building skills. The diversity of our businesses creates a variety of opportunities for students to gain exposure to the work of a first-class public agency.

The Planning and Regional Development department is looking for a summer intern to join their team in the Economics unit. The project they would work on is conducting detailed research of equity issues in transportation and would work towards developing paper and powerpoint on the issues as they relate to the agency.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Independently researching region and state-level economic topics relating to transportation, environment justice, and regional demographics.
  • Conducting review of literature for designated research topic
  • Compilation of statistics at both national and regional level
  • Discussions with relevant agency line and staff departments
  • Conducting quantitative research on key Port Authority initiatives
  • Preparing analysis on topics and policies relevant to the Port Authority that are digestible for public and/or staff.
  • Developing outreach materials on relevant topics and present research at end of internship.
  • Writing professional level documents and emails.
  • Providing support for other duties as assigned

About the Economics Unit in Planning and Regional Development Department:

The Economics Unit in the Planning and Regional Development Department is responsible for providing the agency with variety of economic activities such as forecasting, benefit cost analysis, and other functions.  The Economics Unit works across all departments of the Port Authority (Aviation, Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals, PATH, and the Commercial Ports) to give economic insights into macroeconomic conditions that influence business activities.

Qualifications

  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the upcoming Fall 2022 school semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven and who have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.
  • We welcome applications from a diverse range of university disciplines and concentrations.
  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research and applicable technical skills.
  • Candidates must have the ability to work individually (independently) as well as on a team.

 

Desired

  • Strong interest economics, demographics, and quantitative modeling
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; delivers timely work product and operates efficiency.
  • Organized with experience working independently on multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 (SharePoint, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
  • Working knowledge of modeling software such as R, Stata, Eviews, PYTHON, or other
  • Interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.

 

This will be a hybrid internship opportunity, meaning that it will be virtual and in-person throughout the summer.

*This internship is expected to be a full time internship lasting 12 weeks.
