The Office of the Chief Financial Officer department is looking for a summer intern to join their team in the Storm Mitigation & Resilience Office (SMRO) unit! Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working for the SRMO and supporting grant management tasks including financial analysis, reporting, and facility visits. 
  • Interaction with various staff and various levels of management within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, as well as Management and Budget, Engineering and the Aviation, PATH, Port Commerce and Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals Departments. 
  • Supporting and preparing presentations for senior executive management, manipulating data, and developing reports in excel.

About the Storm Mitigation & Resilience Office (SMRO) Department:

SMRO is broken-out into three divisions. A brief description of each is detailed below.

Federal Grants & Compliance

Coordinates with federal grant agencies to maximize federal funding and ensures agency compliance with federal grant regulations. Coordinates with the Grants Finance and Business Coordination team for financial updates and to address policy issues as they arise.

Grants Management

Manages day-to-day operations of the grants portfolio. Advances grant-funded projects through the capital delivery process and ensures that capital projects and operating expenses are captured within federal grant compliance guidelines. Coordinates with the federal grants and compliance team to ensure that the grants and their associated projects are in alignment and fully compliant.

Grants Finance & Business Coordination

Manages all financial reporting and forecasting, requests for reimbursements, coordination of the Board process, business planning, and performance management in support of SMRO operations.



  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the upcoming Fall 2022 school semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven and who have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.

  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research and applicable technical skills.



  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university with a major in Planning, Business Management, Project Mgmt., Industrial Engineering, Engineering, Computer Science or other Technology (Energy, Environmental, etc.). 
  • Prior experience as an intern is a plus
  • Experience with data collection and analysis
  • Strong presentation skills both quantitative and qualitative
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel


This will be a hybrid internship opportunity, meaning that it will be virtual and in-person throughout the summer.

*This internship is expected to be a full-time internship lasting 12 weeks.

Recruitment Timeline:
