The Engineering department is looking for a summer intern to join their team in the Structural Integrity Unit (SIU) of the Quality Assurance Division (QAD). Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Asset Management
  • Checking Structural Information Database Input
  • Creating and checking Unique Element Identifiers (elements of a structure)
  • Field Audits & Immediate Actions
  • Assist staff in auditing the inspection of bridges, tunnels, buildings, etc.
  • Assist staff in response to emergency structural conditions
  • Other Opportunities (When available from other QAD Units)
  • Assisting in project closeout field inspections of various disciplines

About the Structural Integrity Unit, QAD, Engineering Department:

SIU has two primary responsibilities: Condition Survey Program and Immediate Action Response


Condition Survey Program

  • There are 50 to 60 Condition Inspection Projects per year resulting in a Condition Survey Report. Each project usually involves multiple structures. These are inspections of existing structures to determine their condition and to recommend repairs. With few exceptions, the inspections are structural in nature. The report is issued to the various facilities who use it to complete maintenance repairs and to develop larger construction projects to rehabilitate or replace assets. The projects are completed by consultants. SIU staff audits the consultants in the field and reviews the submitted reports.  Inspection data is input into the Structural Information Database. In addition, reports for vehicular bridges and tunnels are prepared and submitted to NYS/NJDOT. The Port Authority has approximately 250 bridges, 650 major buildings, 25 tunnels, 150 waterfront structures and 1200+ sign and lighting structures.


Immediate Action Response

  • An immediate action is an emergency response to (typically) a structural deficiency. SIU and consultant staff as appropriate respond in the field and determine an temporary or permanent method of repair.


  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the upcoming Fall 2022 school semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven and who have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.

  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research and applicable technical skills.



  • Interest in structural engineering
  • Ability to “go in the field”. Have field clothes and work boots. (Safety equipment is provided)
  • Basic computer and English language skills



This will be a hybrid internship opportunity, meaning that it will be virtual and in-person throughout the summer. You do need to be local to the NY/NJ area to succeed in this position.

This internship is expected to be a full time internship lasting approximately 10 weeks or as your school schedule permits.
