The Port Authority offers paid summer internships to students that provide the opportunity to work with knowledgeable and experienced professionals on assignments critical to operating, maintaining, and expanding the transportation infrastructure for one of the greatest economies in the world.

Assignments include hands-on projects to cultivate technical, writing, communication and team-building skills. The diversity of our businesses creates a variety of opportunities for students to gain exposure to the work of a first-class public agency.

The Port department is looking for a summer intern to join their team in the Project Management unit! Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • EPAMT Water System Rehabilitation Project Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminal: Assist Project Manager with coordination of field activities associated with pipe testing. Duties likely to include coordination with Engineering and their consultants, the work order contractor, Facility maintenance, operations and PAPD as well as the City of Elizabeth, GOCOR and the New Jersey American Water company. Will include both field and office tasks.
  • 65Th Street Transload Rehabilitation Project, Brooklyn, NY: Assist Project Manager with the day-to-day coordination of final design activities. Duties will include attending meetings with PA Engineering and other stakeholders; preparation and distribution of meeting minutes and other documentation as required; coordination of design criteria with the PA Rail Group and Engineering; review of preliminary design documents including plans, specifications, and schedules; coordinating field visits with New York/New Jersey Rail and other stakeholders. Most tasks will be performed in the office however, there may be a need to visit the sit on occasion.
  • Corbin Street Roadway Lighting, Port Newark: Assist Project Manager with the scheduling and coordination of field activities. Project includes the installation of roadway lighting along the southbound side of Corbin Street by Public Service Electric & Gas, Company.
  • Budget and Schedule Monitoring, 4 WTC: Assist the Port Department Project Control Specialist as well as the Project Managers with review of budget and schedule data for a wide range of projects in various stages of development. Duties to include comparison of the latest budget and schedule data with the approved milestone information for each project. Discrepancies in data shall be reported to the PCS and applicable Project Manager in a timely manner.

About the Port Department:

The Port Department is a landlord port responsible for six facilities in the New York and New Jersey Port District that drive our regional economy. As a landlord port, property is leased to private operators. In your daily life, you encounter the goods that move through our facilities, such as the coffee in your mug, the car in your driveway, the furniture in your home, the cell phone in your pocket. The Port Authority also maintains and operates public berths, at which shippers can arrange to load and unload cargo. Most of the vehicles coming into and out of the Port use public berths, as does most of the bulk and breakbulk cargo. The Port Authority and port partners build, improve, and maintain most of the terminals' facilities and underlying infrastructure. The Port Authority has invested millions of dollars into the Port's transportation connections, including intermodal infrastructure such as Express Rail, as well as road connections to the surrounding highways, interstates, and the New Jersey Turnpike. The Port Department's mission is to develop and manage competitive port infrastructure and service by providing leadership to expedite movement of cargo in a secure, environmentally, and financially sound manner.

 

Qualifications

  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the upcoming Fall 2022 school semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven and who have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.
  • We welcome applications from a diverse range of University disciplines and concentrations.
  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research, and applicable technical skills.

 

Desired

  • The selected candidate should have a basic understanding of engineering design procedures and construction scheduling.
  • Should have a basic understanding of construction safety protocols and be willing to spend some time in the field.
  • Feel comfortable attending meetings and presenting information to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive written documentation of meeting minutes, contractor field activities, summaries of verbal communications, etc. for review and use by project stakeholders.

 

This will be a hybrid internship opportunity, meaning that it will be virtual and in-person throughout the summer.

*This internship is expected to be a full-time internship lasting 8 weeks.
