The Aviation Department is looking for a summer intern to join their team in the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting unit. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in developing and revising standard operating guidelines related to emergency response
  • Conduct research of applicable PANYNY policies as it relates to standard operating guidelines
  • Research applicable consensus standards as it relates to standard operating guidelines
  • Awareness of federal regulatory requirements related to ARFF’s operating guidelines
  • Understand National Fire Incident Reporting System
  • Understanding of emergency services and incident command system

  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the upcoming Fall 2022 school semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven and who have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.

  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research and applicable technical skills.


  • The intern selected to this position needs to be able to communicate effectively in that they can translate ideas, data and practices into a succession planning manual; this is a valuable and required skill.  Interpersonal skills are another essential skill for this position in order to effectively work with ARFF’s Deputy Fire Chiefs recognizing their unique perspectives of command and operational perspectives within their ARFF command. Collaboration, time management and adaptability are other skills needed for this internship as you will be working as part of a team and collectively work Deputy Fire Chiefs in ARFF within the time frame of the internship. Focusing on adaptability is a cornerstone as the environment of ARFF is extremely diverse related to labor rules and expectations in the work force.
  • Supporting skills for this internship include critical thinking, ability to perform research and analysis and being embodied by initiative. The requirements of this internship require critical thinking in that there needs to be a tendency to critical view processed and demonstrate an ability to ask questions in order to understand job functions and processes related to the aircraft rescue firefighting operations. Research and analysis is a piece that ensures the intern is prepared to perform empirical research on job functions; the candidate will be faced with a lot of information and the ability to process the information is directly related to the success of the internship. A self-starter and a candidate who is initiative is a great fit for this position who is ready to take on these tasks and does not need direction on each task they begin.
  • Receptiveness and technical proficiency in public administration practices is a preferred skill although any candidate with some skill set in these areas would be successful.
  • Graduate student in Public Administration, Business, Human Resources or Fire Science preferred; all undergraduate students in the above disciplines will also be considered
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed and able to work without supervision
  • Energetic and eager to tackle projects and ideas
  • Ability to multitask
  • Copes well under pressure


This will be a hybrid internship opportunity, meaning that it will be virtual and in-person throughout the summer.

*This internship is expected to be a full time (4 Days Per Week) internship lasting 12 weeks.
