​​​​​​The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey Law Department (Authority) has an exciting career opportunity in its Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) for an attorney to handle the broad and interesting variety of legal work required for the Authority to comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, as well rules and policies adopted pursuant to the Authority’s Compact, its enabling statutes, and bi-state legislation governing the policies and programs being implemented to advance its mission. 

  • The selected candidate will serve in the OLC within the agency’s Law Department, under the supervision of the Assistant General Counsel. 
  • The attorney will provide advice and counsel to Authority internal client groups (particularly, Human Resources, but potentially, to all of the agency’s departments) and will work on complex legal matters relating to the agency’s workforce and operations, including issues involving the following: the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Equal Pay Act, federal and state tax laws and regulations, as well as the United States, New York, and New Jersey Constitutions. 
  • The past year attorneys in the OLC have provided legal advice on a wide range of issues concerning the Authority’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The focus of the position will be on employment and employee benefits matters pertaining to the Authority’s workforce of more than 7,000 employees.
  •  In addition, the attorney will address matters involving questions of regulatory law, corporate governance, and the agency’s powers and legal authority under its Compact and bi-state enabling legislation, by providing legal counsel and preparing written guidance concerning such matters. From time to time, the attorney will prepare and review written agreements, particularly concerning employment and benefits matters.


Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced employment attorney with 5+ years of experience in a law firm, corporate law department, or government agency to join the OLC team.  
  • This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity to work on an extraordinary range of sophisticated legal matters. 
  • The selected candidate will have an ability to contribute in a meaningful way to current and future regional transportation programs and a broad array of initiatives that the Authority is undertaking in the New York-New Jersey region. 
  • Outstanding written /oral communications skills are a must.
