The Port Authority offers 12-week paid summer internships to students that provide the opportunity to work with knowledgeable and experienced professionals on assignments critical to operating, maintaining, and expanding the transportation infrastructure for one of the greatest economies in the world.

The Security Business Resource Management & Planning department is looking for a summer intern to join their team! Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

The Performance, Policy & Planning Unit works with security operations and police across Port Authority facilities to promote a data-driven and accountable approach to resource management. The team manages PAPD records while ensuring the usability of implemented systems by offering technical assistance to the PAPD. PPP prepares crime and security performance reports in conjunction with OCSO staff and PAPD and promotes security policy and procedural uniformity across OCSO Departments. This includes making recommendations for process and policy improvements, regularly producing statistics and reports on crime and critical infrastructure protection, and maintaining a strategic planning process that aligns functional work with the Agency’s broader strategic goals. A temporary intern is sought to assist with regular tasks associated with the Unit’s crime analysis functions, which are done in support of the Port Authority Police Department. Some of the tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring PAPD data integrity by reading, understanding, auditing, potentially correcting, and correctly classifying criminal and non-criminal incident reports in accordance with the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting standards
  • Assisting with the distribution of a suite of briefing documents which include, but are not limited to, crime statistics, computer aided dispatch (CAD) reports, information related to motor vehicle accidents, PAPD response times, as well as other ad hoc requests from PAPD and OCSO leadership
  • Identifying possible trends for additional analysis and actualizing ideas if requested
  • Writing policy related to PAPD initiatives and reporting practices, many specifically related to our recent transition from summary-based to incident-based reporting Performing high-level research on relevant topics, drafting memos or briefs with preliminary recommendations, and creating presentations on areas related to security or police performance

About the Security Business Resource Management & Planning Department:

  • The Resource Management and Planning department's mission is to support the delivery of quality services by establishing, implementing, and monitoring resource management policies and procedures for all CSO Departments. There is also a large focus on performing objective analyses and enabling decision-makers to assess policies, programs, and performance in an efficient manner.


  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the upcoming Fall 2020 school semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven and who have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.

  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research and applicable technical skills.


  • A successful candidate has great attention to detail, innovative ideas, and a passion for public service.
  • He or she should be a self-starter and be able to work both independently or with a group.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Experience with Adobe Professional, Tableau, Crystal Reports, and/or SQL preferred.

About the Program

  • Interns have the opportunity to support their departments with critical projects such as analyzing regional demand data for our airports, conducting interview assessments, development of our annual budget, designing sustainability initiatives, and developing operational plans for retail development.

Recruitment Timeline:

  • Interview Process: The hiring department/unit conducts interviews in late January and the process will continue until offers are made to selected candidates (February-May).
  • Program Start Date: The Summer Internship Program is slated to begin May 28, 2020 and runs until mid-August.
