Environmental Analyst

Reporting to the Chief of Materials Engineering, and under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Chemical/Environmental Testing, the Environmental Analyst will be responsible for conducting sampling and analyses in support of the Port Authority’s testing and hazardous waste programs. The position entails approximately 20% fieldwork, including sampling of construction materials and environmental media at facilities within the Port District. Field work will consist of sampling monitoring wells, soil piles, drummed waste, and discharges in accordance with EPA, OSHA and state protocols.  The Environmental Analyst will also be responsible for maintaining the Port Authority’s hazardous waste disposal program through the management of RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) and Department of Transportation (DOT) permitted contractors; waste characterization; records management and reporting.

Specific tasks include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares regulatory reports under RCRA
  • Classifies waste materials based on chemical composition and testing data, prepares waste profiles, inventories, and coordinates disposal meeting the requirements of Hazardous and Universal Waste regulations
  • Performs testing on construction materials such as concrete, fireproofing, ceramic tiles, etc.
  • Utilizes databases and workflows for the management of environmental programs
  • Conducts air monitoring for particulate matter (PM-10 and PM2.5), Total Suspended Particulate Lead (TSP-lead), and carbon monoxide


Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in earth sciences or engineering, with course work in chemistry
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the environmental compliance monitoring, including laboratory and field work.
  • Completed OSHA 1910.120 40-hour training and current refresher
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain security clearance (10-year background check) for restricted airport work


Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in earth sciences or engineering, with course work in chemistry
  • Seven (7) years’ experience in the environmental compliance monitoring, including laboratory and field work.
  • Experience with hazardous and universal waste disposal
  • Self-motivated, team leader, experienced in environmental testing/materials engineering, and meeting testing performance standards of ASTM and the US EPA.
  • Ability to pass Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Certification examination within two years
  • RCRA training meeting the requirements of 40CFR Part 262
  • International Code Council (ICC) - SFRM & Intumescent Inspector Certification
