The Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation (PATH) operates the busiest and most critical rail transit system in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region.  PATH began in 1908 as the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad, a privately owned corporation established to provide rail service between New York and New Jersey.  PATH was established in 1962 as a subsidiary of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.  PATH is a 24/7 Heavy Rail Rapid Transit System service the most dependent region in the country.  PATH has 13 stations, six New York and seven in New Jersey, which currently caries approximately 80 million passengers annually.

PATH’s mission is to excel in the delivery of safe, reliable, high quality, and cost-effective transportation service that contributes to enhance regional mobility and economic development, while serving as stewards of the regional environment by providing efficient mass transit service and effectively managing energy sources.  It takes a dedicated team of over 1,300 men and women to operate the PATH System safely, efficiently and with a high standard of customer service.  We are currently replacing the signal system with a state of the art automatic train control system, are rehabilitating all facilities, stations and railcars due to Superstorm Sandy, and we have countless maintenance and State of Good Repair (SGR) projects for our structures, railcar, track, signal, power and communications systems.

The Port Authority’s PATH Operations Fellow Program is an opportunity for passionate individuals to help shape the future of our transportation network. As part of this program, we are seeking transportation and rail transit professionals with an interest in operations management to join our PATH team. Since taking control of the PATH System in 1962, the Port Authority has been a leader and innovator in rail transportation. This is your chance to join the PATH team as we connect the region in new ways for generations to come.

Program Details

The Operations Fellows Program within the PATH Corporation is designed for career-minded individuals with an interest in transportation operations management, who aspire to manage people in the future.  This program is a two-year rotational experience designed to provide candidates with exposure to a variety of operating functions that are at the heart of PATH's operations, including:

  • Rail Operations and Maintenance
  • Capital Project Management
  • Finance & Budgeting
  • Construction Coordination/Logistic Planning
  • Transportation Planning

In addition to rotational assignments within PATH, individuals will be able to learn more about the Port Authority overall through executive networking sessions, facility tours, and structured training and development programs.  Operations Fellows also have leadership development opportunities through customized training and workshops, individual coaching and mentoring and development exercises to prepare them to become future leaders for the Port Authority’s essential operations.  Upon successful completion of the program, Operations Fellows will be considered for operations management roles within the PATH Corporation.

Operations Fellows will be selected based on academic achievement, analytical and communication skills and work experience.  The selection process for the Program is highly rigorous and consists of multiple rounds of interviews, including a qualitative interview, a comptency-based panel interview, and multiple assessment exercises.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation or Operations Management, Industrial or Electrical Engineering, Project Management or a related field and two full years of experience in the Transportation/Operations/Project Management field
  • A Master’s degree in one of the above areas of study and one full year of experience in the Transportation/Operations/Project Management field.
  • Candidates must have the flexibility to work irregular shifts from time to time as needed.


  • Strong interest in building a career in the Rail Transit Industry.
  • Demonstrated interest in transportation operations through prior work experience, areas of study, internships, other volunteer service experience (facility management, transportation, etc.)
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills.
  • Able to work effectively across organizational levels, from executives to unionized workforce.
  • Strong presence, excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
