Senior Architect

Responsibilities

The Port Department is looking for a Senior Architect to join their team. Reporting to the Manager, Port Planning and Development, you will be responsible for developing and coordinating the analysis; planning and preliminary design of new, expanded or modified marine terminal facilities including general site plans, buildings, roadways, and terminal yards, and defining functional requirements and design criteria for such facilities. 

The position is also responsible for directing and providing architectural services necessary to support facility operational needs; port leasing activities (providing surveys, site plans, and property descriptions needed for lease documents); tenant alteration reviews; Engineering contract document reviews; general port planning and development analyses; and coordination with PA staff, as well as governmental agencies, consultants and private entities on maritime-related architectural issues. 

Additional responsibilities include:
•Developing and assessing planning alternatives relative to business plan objectives and physical site constraints;
•Developing conceptual layouts for Stage I planning/design efforts; supporting PA and consultant staff activities related to the final design (Stage III) of new facilities, and the acquisition of    new properties (including technical due diligence and environmental reviews);
•Evaluating Quality Assurance Department condition survey reports to develop corrective action plans;
•Reviewing and/or preparing engineering staffing and construction cost estimates. 

The position requires frequent site visits to port facilities for which mass transportation is not generally available. 

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university.  An advanced degree in Urban Planning/Architecture preferred.
  • Must have five (5) years of experience in architectural/engineering design on multiple projects of significant size, scope and complexity.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a Federal Security Background check and obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) to work in a maritime environment as required by Department of Homeland Security.

Applicants must meet all performance and attendance standards and have completed all probationary periods.

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

•Professional Architect's License in New York or New Jersey.
•Demonstrated knowledge of AutoCAD.
•Demonstrated experience with developing presentation materials.
•Extensive experience in planning and design of port, commercial, industrial, and/or transportation facilities.
•Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to problems, resolve conflicts and work effectively with both technical and non-technical staff.
•Demonstrated experience in supporting PA staff, consultants, and external parties on technical and operational matters including land use planning.
•Demonstrated knowledge of state and local codes, Port Authority construction standards, transportation industry standards, and familiarity with Port Commerce facilities and operations.
•Demonstrated experience in land use and/or maritime planning.
•Knowledge of leasing, surveys, and property descriptions.
•Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
•Demonstrated ability to take independent action, and be innovative and decisive.
•Familiarity with project management and/or project development process.
