The Port Authority offers 12-week paid summer internships to students that provide the opportunity to work with knowledgeable and experienced professionals on assignments critical to operating, maintaining, and expanding the transportation infrastructure for one of the greatest economies in the world.

Assignments include hands-on projects to cultivate technical, writing, communication and team-building skills. The diversity of our businesses creates a variety of opportunities for students to gain exposure to the work of a first-class public agency

The Aviation department is looking for a summer intern to join their team in the Newark Airport Redevelopment division! Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • The selected candidate will be under the supervision of a Program Manager of the Terminal A Redevelopment Program and/or an authorized representative of EWR Terminal A Redevelopment Program.
  • The Intern is responsible for and to perform varied engineering, planning, and monitoring of construction activities, and other work assigned.
  • Responsibilities are not fully represented here and are subject to change to meet the needs and operational requirements of the program at the discretion of the Program Director.
  • Daily activities include, but are not limited to:
    • Review project drawings, estimates and specifications
    • Catalogue, maintain and update inventories of project drawings and specifications
    • Assist and support the monitoring of project activities including design and construction
    • Assist in the research and development of new, innovative materials, procedures and equipment to ensure the program is keeping up with the current state-of-the-art technologies and to increase efficiency and sustainability of the program
    • Create, develop, or edit drawings in AutoCAD


  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the upcoming Fall 2019 school semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven and who have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.

  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research and applicable technical skills.


  • Must in one of the follow programs of study: Mechanical, Structural, Electrical or Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • Preferred minimum of three (3) years of college courses
  • Demonstrates experience in reading and reviewing documents, estimating and writing technical documents
  • General knowledge of engineering task and construction activities
  • Effective written and oral communication skills including presentation skills
  • Knowledge of Auto CAD and Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of the Port Authority organizational structure and its policies and practices

About the Program

  • Interns have the opportunity to support their departments with critical projects such as analyzing regional demand data for our airports, conducting interview assessments, development of our annual budget, designing sustainability initiatives, and developing operational plans for retail development.
  • Engineering Interns have the opportunity to assist experienced engineers with planning, design, construction management and supervision, materials testing and inspection, and information technology management for projects.
  • On the job, learning is supported by networking sessions with senior management, intern meet and greets and facility tours; broadening your understanding of the agency.

Recruitment Timeline:

  • Interview Process: The hiring department/unit conducts interviews in late January and the process will continue until offers are made to selected candidates (February-April).
  • Program Start Date: The Summer Internship Program is slated to begin May 30, 2019 and runs until mid-August.
