Director, Port Department

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director of PANYNJ, the Port Director directs and coordinates the overall operations of Port Authority facilities in New York and New Jersey.  He or she develops and implements programs to enhance operational efficiency and service levels, manages capital, operating and maintenance costs to achieve optimum net revenue, ensures that operating facilities are safe, secure, reliable, well maintained and accessible, develops and implements major projects such as dredging and transportation infrastructure improvements, coordinates with other governmental entities on port and cargo issues, maintains contact with key stakeholders (personnel, tenants, public officials, and other port partners), ensures compliance with agency policies, procedures and management initiatives, provides for the development of staff and directs staff in the development of the department’s long-range strategic business planning efforts, annual budget and long-range forecast.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.  Advanced degree is desirable.

Experience Requirements: 

  • The Port Director will be a seasoned and dynamic professional with proven leadership in the transportation industry.
  • At least 10 years’ progressively responsible senior level management experience, preferably for an organization of similar size and complexity.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of federal directives and regulations governing port security, operations and management; extensive knowledge of the port/cargo industry and marine terminal management and demonstrated experience managing, leading and developing a large, diverse professional staff. 
  • He or she will have experience engaging with Boards of Directors, strong financial/analytical skills with previous responsibility for complex budgets and capital expenditures. Innovative problem solving, adept in delivering superior customer service and exceptional interpersonal, writing, presentation and overall communication skills. 
  • Proven experience leading, mentoring and developing staff is a must.
