About the Internship

 

The Engineering Department’s vision is to be the stewards of the agency’s infrastructure of today and to design and build the agency’s future.  As part of a multidisciplinary Design Division, the Architecture Unit provides a broad range of design services built around a practice of design excellence, sustainability, resilience, and accessibility. As an Architectural Intern, you will interface with other architects, landscape architects, graphic designers, and/or model makers to support the Port Authority's core transportation and infrastructure programs. You will learn to balance critical program requirements, such as schedule, budget, life safety, and spatial requirements, with the appropriate architectural response to achieve quality public environments for our facility customers, employees, and/or tenants. Interns work on some of our most exciting projects and have had their designs built to serve the public.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design of a portion an Architectural scope of work.
  • Produce design services (research, drawings, models, renderings) of high quality that conform to design standards and guidelines, for example, Engineering’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control Guidelines and CAD/BIM Standards for drawings. 
  • Report progress to a Task Leader/Lead Architect and Management staff as requested. 
  • Participate in summer intern specific events and Architecture Unit staff meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college/university through Summer 2025 and into the Fall 2025 semester
  • Rising senior, 5th year bachelor's, or graduate-level student in a NAAB accredited Architecture program
  • Candidates must submit a portfolio with their applications

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Convey ideas through hand sketches, renderings and vignettes.
  • Design capability, demonstrated with a portfolio submitted with the application
  • Architectural technical knowledge.
  • Computer skills and knowledge (such as AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, Sketchup, Adobe Suite & Office Suite.)
  • Model making ability.
  • Previous architectural employment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 29, 2025
  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 22, 2025
  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
  • The format is expected to be hybrid

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $17.63 to $27.21 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
