Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and refinement of standard operating guidelines for Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) personnel as it relates to health and safety under the guidance and supervision of the ARFF Command Staff.
  • Aid ARFF Command Staff in developing an enhanced proficiency and competency program related to ARFF operations.
  • Enhance programs in place to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Identify electronic tracking or improved systems to be employed by the ARFF Command Staff.
  • Support the ARFF Command Staff with identifying and employing record management systems such as enhancing the utilization of the National Fire Reporting System for incident reporting and ARFF apparatus vehicle operational check out and inventory system.
  • Create a centralized ARFF SharePoint site that can be utilized by all ARFF commands.

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program through the 2024-2025 school year.
  • Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region
  • Interest in public service and or transportation
  • Willingness to learn

Desired:

  • Graduate student in Public Administration, Business, Human Resources, Fire Science, or a related discipline (undergraduate students will also be considered)
  • Fire service experience which could include fire explorer, fire cadets, or Firefighter I completion
  • Understanding of National Fire Incident Reporting System, emergency services, and incident command system
  • Energetic and eager to tackle projects
  • Ability to: multi-task; work well under pressure; translate ideas, data, and practices into a succession planning manual; and work as part of a team
  • Self-directed and able to work without supervision
  • Adaptability
  • Critical thinking
  • Empirical research skills

Internship Details:

  • The start date will be determined at the time of an offer (likely September or October)
  • This internship will require 10 to 15 hours/week while classes are in session
  • The format is expected to be hybrid, partially virtual and partially in-person at Newark Airport
