Responsibilities
 

General Maintainer 

Clean PATH car body exteriors, interiors, and associated equipment. Some work may also involve operating small machinery to assist Journeymen and mechanics in maintaining electrical and mechanical components, lubricating parts, changing oil and filters, and assisting with car repairs and inspections. 

PATH is a 24 hour, 7 days-a-week operation and General Maintainers will be required to work rotating shifts (am, pm, midnights, weekends, holidays, and overtime if necessary). 

Qualifications 

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position: 

• High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
• One-year experience in heavy construction maintenance and electrical repairs.
• Candidates will require to have a valid driver's license
• Knowledge and experience with hand tools and powers tools.
• Ability to work rotating shifts (am, pm, midnight, weekends and holidays).

Starting Salary: 

General Maintainer - $24.33 hourly. General Maintainers are eligible for annual step increases (subject to collective bargaining agreement).

Selection Process 

Thanks for your interest in the PATH General Maintainer position. Our selection process will move very quickly. After applying qualified candidates will be invited to take a written exam.
 

Written Exam: Written exam is designed to measure a candidate's knowledge in areas such as: 

• Basic Math Test (Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide Whole Numbers, Fractions and Decimals)
• Industrial Reading Test
• Mechanical Reasoning Test.

Successful candidates who qualify on the written exam will be invited to participate in an oral interview.

Interview: The PATH Entry Level Maintenance oral exam/ interview is designed to measure the candidate's work experience, skills and abilities in areas such as: Situational Judgment; Problem Sensitivity; Safety Orientation; and Oral Communication.

Only candidates who qualify on both the written exam and oral interview will be eligible for further consideration and will be subject to a comprehensive background check.

About PATH:

The Port Authority Trans Hudson Corporation (PATH), an FRA-regulated commuter railroad, is the primary transit link between Manhattan and New Jersey communities and suburban commuter railroads. Carrying over 75 million passengers per year, PATH trains run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, one of the few 24-hour systems in the world. Since the early 20th Century, PATH and its predecessor, the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad, have carried passengers between New Jersey and points in Midtown and Lower Manhattan, serving as a key link in the region's transportation network and as a catalyst for continued residential, commercial and employment growth.

PATH operates 24 hours per day/7 days per week/365 days per year. Employees are required to work weekends, holidays, atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts) and during inclement weather conditions. Incumbents may be subjected to mandatory overtime at the beginning or end of their scheduled tour, or on their days off. A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH’s unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods. Working conditions will be challenging, including but not limited to inclement weather, direct contact with the public, in tunnel and outside areas during active train service, and an industrial environment. Commitment to attendance is expected and required.
