The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey offers paid internships to students, providing the opportunity to work with experienced professionals on assignments critical to building, operating, and maintaining transportation and infrastructure assets in New York and New Jersey. Assignments include hands-on projects to cultivate technical, writing, communication, and team-building skills. The diversity of our businesses creates a variety of opportunities for students to gain exposure to the work of a first-class public agency.

The Audit Department is looking for several interns to join one of the following teams: Contract Administration; Activity Based Revenue; Internal Controls & Compliance; and Process Improvements.

About the Audit Department:

The Audit Department's mission is to assist the organization's management in achieving its business objectives by bringing an independent, systematic, and disciplined approach to evaluating and improving the effectiveness of internal control and the management of risk. To that end, the Audit Department is responsible for providing internal auditing services in the Port Authority including reviews of business processes, systems and operations, and examinations of the records of tenants and contractors that do business with the Port Authority. The Audit Department reports to the Inspector General and the Audit Committee of the Board of Commissioners.

 Responsibilities:

  • Planning of audits
  • Conducting reviews of various Port Authority operations and business processes, including reviews of private sector partners doing business with Port Authority
  • Developing the audit scope and audit program
  • Executing the audit work, including the gathering and analysis of required data and information
  • Preparing  work papers
  • Drafting reports, summarizing the results of the audit and recommendations for improvement
  • Communicating audit results to auditee management

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be students who will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program through the Spring 2024 semester
  • We are seeking interns who are driven and have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region
  • We welcome applications from all types of majors
  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research, and applicable technical skills

Desired Skills:

  • Major in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
  • General understanding of systematic reviews (internal controls) to ensure effectiveness and accountability
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work independently or within a team, and prioritize work
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office 

 Internship Details:

  • This internship is expected to start in October with an end date that will be determined after the internship starts
  • This internship will require 16-20 hours per week
  • The format is expected to be hybrid (in-person component at Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City, NJ)
  • The hourly salary range is $17.20 to $28.85 (the hourly salary is determined by internship type and school year)
