The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey offers paid internships to students, providing the opportunity to work with knowledgeable and experienced professionals on assignments critical to operating, maintaining, and expanding the transportation infrastructure for one of the greatest economies in the world. Assignments include hands-on projects to cultivate technical, writing, communication, and team-building skills. The diversity of our businesses creates a variety of opportunities for students to gain exposure to the work of a first-class public agency.

The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (ODEI) is looking for an intern to join their team! Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the empowerment of Employee Business Resource Groups (EBRGs) through enhancing guidelines, scheduling quarterly check-ins, meeting individually and collectively with groups, maintaining EBRG budget and processing budget requests, researching and booking speakers and trainings appropriate to development of EBRG members, and more.
  • Assisting in maintaining the Workforce Diversity Equity & Inclusion (WDEI) internal SharePoint site
  • Researching best practices on organizational Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in general, inclusive programming, policies, treatment of employees and specific team projects.
  • Handling highly confidential and privileged information including employee demographics, feedback and complaints, salary, band information, and more.
  • Supporting the ODEI team with data analytics and reporting, such as workforce analysis for our corporate management plan and our Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) reporting needs, Minority/Woman-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) performance reports on minority business utilization, contract awards and payments.
  • Additional projects and responsibilities as needed and assigned.

About the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion:

The ODEI team collaborates with internal and external partners to advance behavior-based change strategies, including governance and accountability mechanisms, policies, procedures, action plans, communications, and skill building that empowers all to reach their full potential in order to accomplish agency priorities.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must be students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program returning to their program during the Fall 2023 semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven, and have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.
  • We welcome applications from a diverse range of majors/minors.
  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research, and applicable technical skills.

Desired Skills

  • Organizing ideas, creating PowerPoints, Excel Spreadsheets, and other documents which help further goals.
  • Uses thoughtful and deliberate decision-making strategies to ensure inclusive programming, policies, and treatment of employees

Internship Details:

  • This internship will require at approximately 25 hours/week while school is in session; the internship can be more full-time when school is not in session (i.e. summer)
  • The format is expected to be hybrid, partially in-person and partially virtual
  • This is an ongoing internship; the end date will be determined later on
  • These details are subject to change
