Responsibilities
The Plumber is a journey-level job title and performs diverse, highly skilled work in the installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of a wide variety of plumbing systems and equipment, such as low and high pressure water systems, sewer lines, drainage systems, gas lines, pumps sewer ejectors, valves, tanks, flushometers, etc. The Plumber also will repair, clean, adjust and/or perform preventative plumbing maintenance on equipment, tools, machinery etc.
Plumbers must have knowledge of plumbing codes and regulations, reading blueprints, and the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose plumbing problems.
The Port Authority operates 24 hours, 7-days a week. Plumbers work a 40-hour week, which may include nights, weekends, holidays, overtime as needed and responding to emergencies during off hours. Plumbers are assigned to work at our various facilities throughout the NY/NJ area.

Testing
Selected qualified candidates will be invited to progress through the assessment process. The assessment process includes a written exam and a practical.
Written test: The written exam will measure your knowledge in areas such as: trade tools and equipment such as water distribution systems, pipes and pipe fittings, troubleshooting and repairs, sprinkler, standpipe and fire protection systems, gas lines, lavatory and hot water fixtures, pumps, drainage systems, hot water heating systems, meter readings, state and municipal codes and safety practices.
Practical test: Successful written-test candidates will be invited to participate in a hands-on practical test to measure your knowledge and skill in the installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of plumbing fixtures and equipment including gas, water, steam, waste and vent piping systems.
Selected candidates will be eligible for further consideration and will have to pass comprehensive background check and medical exam.
Compensation & Benefits
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers a comprehensive health benefits package and participates in the New York State and Local Employees' Retirement System (NYSLERS).
Starting Salary: $36.06 hourly. Plumbers are eligible for annual step increases up to an annual salary of $75,010 (subject to collective bargaining agreement).
