The Comptroller’s department is looking for an intern to join their Payroll Accounting team! Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Review, organize and scan payroll documents that pertain to separated employee payments special payment requests and petty cash.
  • Assist in the production of payrolls including query and spreadsheet analysis of calculated and confirmed payroll data.
  • Maintain logs and reports for petty cash and time & labor summary reports.
  • Verify time & labor summary reports and perform audits to ensure that reports are received timely and properly approved.
  • Assist with the analysis and preparation of balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Assist with special projects as time permits.

About the Comptroller’s Department

As a reporting Department to the Chief Financial Officer, the Comptroller’s Department is a team of dedicated professionals who ensure the accuracy of the Port Authority’s finances. As part of the Comptroller’s Department team, you will gain insight and experience surrounding the agency’s financial structure and internal control processes as well as knowledge of the operations of our various lines of business, giving you extensive opportunities for a long-term career at the Port Authority.

Under the Corporate Accounting section of the Department, the Payroll Accounting Division processes and delivers compensation to all agency employees; offers a full range of compensation services including direct deposit, tax withholding, and retirement systems reporting; and responds to employee questions, interacts with labor negotiations to seamlessly implement any applicable changes, and collaborates with the Law Department regarding payroll related laws and regulations.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must be students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program returning to their program during the Fall 2023 semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven, and have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.
  • We welcome applications from a diverse range of majors/minors.
  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research, and applicable technical skills.

Desired Skills

  • Accounting, Business, Finance or related major.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite Office, preferably Excel applications.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills in reconciling financial information.
  • Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions.

Internship Details:

  • The duration is expected to be approximately 12 weeks, starting in the beginning of June 2023.
  • This internship will require work 5 days/week at 7.25 hours/day.
  • The format is expected to be hybrid, partially in-person and partially virtual.
