Responsibilities

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is seeking a seasoned architect to serve as its Chief Architect, a key member of the Engineering-Architecture Design Division in the Port Authority’s Engineering Department.

Reporting to the Chief of Design, the successful candidate is responsible for managing the Engineering Department’s Architectural Unit. The Chief Architect supervises a team of 30+ staff comprised of employees and on-site and out-of-house consultants; builds and manages a workforce based on organizational goals, budget considerations, and staffing needs; facilitates cooperation, and develops and/or manages and motivates team members, to accomplish group goals; ensures staff are appropriately recruited, selected, appraised, and rewarded in the Architectural Unit; takes action to address performance problems; actively engages in internal and external professional development opportunities and industry organizations; fosters an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued and leveraged to achieve the vision and mission of the organization.

The Chief Architect directs the architectural design work for all Port Authority capital and operating projects that are under the authority of the Chief Engineer, and serves as the subject matter expert, providing guidance and advisory services in their expertise, to senior Port Authority executives. The architects in the Architectural Unit are responsible for providing the design services in preparation for planning/studies, preliminary and final designs, final contract documents, and post award construction review, for the architectural elements of projects; and collaborating with multi-discipline architectural and engineering teams, which may be geographically distributed. Designs are to be high quality, innovative, and cost effective, complying with applicable codes and standards, and satisfy the Line Department’s needs and expectations. Additional services delivered by the Architectural Unit include graphic design, model making, interior design, landscape design, and sustainable design. The Chief Architect signs the architectural contract drawings prepared by in-house staff.

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor Degree in Architecture from a 5-year program at an accredited college or university
  • Licensed to practice Architecture in New York and New Jersey 
  • A minimum of 15 years’ experience in progressively more responsible positions in the field of transportation planning and architecture, personally developing programs and projects.  Types of transportation facilities shall include several of the following: airports (terminals); parking facilities; rail transit; light rail transit; bus terminals; ferry terminals; vehicular and rail tunnels and bridges; toll plazas; open public spaces; and non-public facilities that support the public infrastructure 
  • Experience managing a large full-service staff of at least 10 professionals and sub-professionals engaged in all phases of architectural design, including post-award construction review services, for transportation facilities
  • Ability to successfully lead project teams and manage project schedule, budget, and programs
  • Working knowledge of codes, laws, standards, and guidelines applicable to public space planning and architectural design of public transportation facilities
  • Experience as a supervisor overseeing the day-to-day performance of 4 or more direct reports
  • Ability to maintain a positive environment, set goals, provide incentives, recognize achievements, provide discipline, and escalate issues warranting support of others
  • Valid driver’s license

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Strong conceptualization, problem solving and decision-making skills as evidenced from experience in planning, directing, and managing both routine and large-scale transportation programs and projects
  • Superior oral and written communication and presentation skills including experience making planning and architectural presentations in front of large client groups, community groups and Executive level staff, and experience participating in public outreach programs as part of a regulatory approval process for a transportation infrastructure program (project)
  • Results oriented, with a strong customer focus
  • Ability to promote the work of the team
  • Rapid adaptability to new information, continuous improvement, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles
  • Demonstrated active involvement with professional organizations and associations
