The Aviation Department is seeking a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst who has interest in the aviation industry, data analytics, business intelligence, and wants to help support the strategy for long-term development of the Port Authority system of airports. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst will be responsible for collecting, reporting, analyzing, and communicating the implications of passenger, operations, and cargo data from over 100 airlines at the five airports in the Port Authority system; John F. Kennedy International (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), Newark Liberty International (EWR), Teterboro (TEB), and New York Stewart International (SWF) airports.  

Reporting to the Manager of Strategic Analysis & Forecasting, this position serves a crucial role for the team that develops forecasting models, industry intelligence and strategic analysis to support the Aviation Department’s business and strategic plans, terminal and capacity improvements, and revenue estimates. The Senior Analyst will lead the unit’s forecasting efforts and is also responsible for using Tableau, Power BI, and other analytical tools to create business intelligence of airline passenger statistics, operations, and cargo volume. 

In this role you would have the unique opportunity to generate short-term and long-term passenger and aircraft activity forecasts for all Port Authority airports that are complemented and enhanced by our aviation industry and economic research. The forecasts are used for a variety of internal planning and revenue forecasting purposes. In addition to forecast projections, the Unit produces analytical products (e.g., dashboards, and white papers) used by all staff within the Department and at PANYNJ airport facilities.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the Unit’s forecasting efforts for our airports, including passengers, cargo, operations, fleet, and fuel on a short-term and long-term basis and for major holidays by using econometric modeling, scenario analysis, and industry research
  • Conduct industry research to support forecast development and internal briefings by attending webinars, reading news and blog articles, reviewing airline earnings meetings, and participating in trade group presentations 
  • Help prepare analytical documents and presentations, including a monthly “Facility Report” highlighting estimates of monthly passenger volume, an annual “Year in Review” report highlighting activity at our facilities, “Quarterly Briefings” sharing industry trends with our colleagues, as well as required data analytics and business intelligence reporting to the City of New York 
  • Lead development and maintenance of internally facing data products, including electronic reports, dashboards, forecasts, and data analyses related to historical / future passenger, flight, and cargo activity (primarily built in Tableau, Power BI, and Excel)
  • Respond to executive requests for airline statistics and assembling customized data analysis & visualizations as appropriate


Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major or concentration in Transportation Planning/ Engineering, Operations Research, Economics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g. Tableau, Microsoft Power BI or other related) and/or relational databases (e.g. Oracle or SQL Server or other related) 
  • Any experience in data analysis and/or business intelligence related role


Ideal candidates will present the following profile:


  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major in Transportation Engineering, Operations Research, Economics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • Experience writing queries and/or creating reports to obtain and manipulate data
  • 2+ years of work experience in data analysis and business intelligence roles, preferably in an aviation or transportation focused industry.
  • Robust understanding of analytical methods (e.g., statistics, regression analysis, econometric forecasting) and three (3) additional years’ experience applying these methods to engineering, planning, operational, or other problems
  • Proficiency in advanced formulas in Excel such as Vlookup, index, match, sumif, etc. and VBA-driven macros  
  • Working knowledge of econometric software packages (e.g., EViews) with experience developing and calibrating multivariate models
  • Familiarity with a variety of aviation data sources such as Dept of Transportation (DOT) T-100 / OD data, Airline Schedule, and Fare/Profitability data, along with an interest in seeking out new data sources that can be used to improve efficiency and business process. 
  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
