Additional Information

This position is with the Office of Sustainability (OS), the department that leads Agency sustainability policy, target-setting, reporting, and project/program development and implementation. The Port Authority is the first US transportation agency to align with the Paris Climate Agreement in 2018, and to adopt a 50 percent by 2030 and net-zero greenhouse gas reduction target in 2021 to align with goals of the U.S. federal government. This position will play an instrumental role in helping the Agency achieve its climate action ambitions by developing and implementing programs and projects that directly reduce agency greenhouse gas emissions.

Reporting to the Clean Energy and Innovation (CEI) Lead, this role involves supporting CEI Lead in  incubating, vetting, developing, and transacting clean energy projects across the agency. Project types could include on-site and grid-scale renewables, alternative fuels, fuel cells, and other innovations in cleantech/climatetech. This position would also play a support role for other sustainability program managers as they advance projects related to energy efficiency and building decarbonization, vehicle/equipment electrification, renewable energy/energy storage, waste management, and alternative fuels portfolios.

This position provides an opportunity for a highly competent, creative, driven candidate to stay on the leading edge of sustainability-related solutions, perform a cross-functional role across the Office of Sustainability’s program portfolios,  interface with various Port Authority departments through planned project implementation at the agency’s NY and NJ facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and execution of agency-wide decarbonization initiatives, including renewable energy and clean on-site generation;
  • Develop slide presentations and other material for internal briefings on sustainability programs and project status;
  • Compile asset / building system information, performance specs and/or drawings;
  • Support development of pilot project to test sustainability innovations, including establishing performance metrics and reporting out on project effectiveness and scalability;
  • Facilitate contractor site visits and project meetings;
  • Support line departments in securing project funding and determination of capital/operating classification, project approval and milestone reporting;
  • Review project proposals, evaluate technologies and decarbonization strategies and associated greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Support contractor selection / award and develop project work orders;
  • Facilitate engineering design review process;
  • Review and process invoices and change orders;
  • Facilitate project status meetings, including development of necessary documentation and material;
  • Track / review project performance metrics and documentation;
  • Track / report on project milestones deliverables;
  • Track / report scope changes and scope creep;
  • Track / report on project budget impacts through project life cycle;
  • Track / report on project cost accruals;
  • Perform cost-benefit and other financial analyses for agency-wide decarbonization programs and incremental milestones;
  • Facilitate the efforts of multiple staff departments as required;
  • Monitor program/project development by tracking scope, timeline and associated cost impacts;
  • Track cleantech/ climatetech advancements and commercial arrangements.

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainability, Project Management, Energy Management, Engineering, Construction or a related discipline with aptitude in Project Finance and Economics;
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in renewable energy, sustainability project deployment, cleantech/ climatetech, engineering, clean energy project finance or related field;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of business practices as they relate to project implementation, including basic principles of accounting, financing and budgeting, creativity and problem-solving ability;

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Advanced degree in Energy Management, Energy/Environmental Policy, Public Administration, Engineering, Business or related field with aptitude in Economics and Finance/Accounting;
  • 10+ years of experience in renewable energy, sustainability project deployment, cleantech/ climatetech, engineering, clean energy project finance or related field;
  • LEED AP BD+C, LEED O+M, CEM and the Project Management Professional (PMP);
  • Demonstrated organizational experience, including coordinating with facility/ maintenance staff, stakeholders and contractors, in developing, implementing and managing project plans, deliverables and schedules;
  • Demonstrated quantitative and analytical skills, including performance measurement;
  • Ability and willingness to learn technical subject matter related to energy and sustainability;
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, with demonstrated initiative;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make concise presentations to a variety of audiences;
  • Knowledge of energy and decarbonization technologies and best practices;
  • Experience in energy-related project and program coordination; monitoring and evaluation;
  • Knowledge in renewable energy resources, and emerging technologies and energy market dynamics;
  • Knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting;
  • Familiarity with current local, state, and federal energy policy, and legislation.
