Responsibilities

Come and join PATH as a Machinist! Under the direct supervision of a Car Equipment Division Supervisor or Foreman, the incumbent performs skilled work that includes, but is not limited to, the operation and repair of machine tools; laying out work; and the installation, removal, assembly, disassembly, testing, servicing and repair of rail cars and associated equipment. 

All tasks may be performed with or without drawings. Work is performed in accordance with established servicing programs and maintenance procedures, and is in conformance with FRA, AAR, OSHA, PA & PATH regulations but does require the use of independent judgment periodically.


NOTE: The foregoing is not exclusive and is not meant to describe all those duties which may be assigned to a Machinist pursuant to the agreement between PATH and RITU.
 

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

Education: High School or Equivalency Diploma is required.

Experience: Completion of a registered Car Equipment Machinist Apprentice Program or, four (4) years’ experience as a journeyman in the Machinist trade which includes, but is not limited to: knowledge of and experience in CNC machine operations, reading and interpreting blueprints; utilization and operation of a crane; fabrication of metal parts; disassembly and reassembly of complex machinery and its components; using tools and equipment associated with machinery such as lathes, precision grinders, presses, mills, boring machines, precision meters, micrometers, and depth gauges.

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

The incumbent must be able to operate and handle heavy equipment, such as 3/8 to 1inch impact guns, large wrenches, torque wrenches, slings and gears weighing up to 70 pounds. The incumbent must be able to communicate verbally and in writing as well as understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

PATH operates 24 hours per day/7 days per week/365 days per year.  Employees are required to work weekends, holidays, atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts) and during inclement weather conditions. Incumbents may be subjected to mandatory overtime at the beginning or end of their scheduled tour, or on their days off.  A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH’s unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods.  Working conditions will be challenging, including but not limited to inclement weather, direct contact with the public, in tunnel and outside areas during active train service, and an industrial environment. Commitment to attendance is expected and required.
