Responsibilities

The Aviation Department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is seeking a senior analyst who has demonstrated quantitative, technical, and communication skills with a strong sense of initiative and passion for using data to tell stories and inform decisions.

The Strategic Analysis & Forecasting Team (the Unit) is responsible for collecting passenger, operations, and cargo data from the airlines at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, and Stewart airports and reporting on it throughout the year via our Oracle based Air Traffic Statistical System (ATSS). The Unit generates short-term and long-term forecasts on activity at our airports for planning and revenue forecasting purposes. Additionally, the Unit conducts research on industry topics related to carrier’s plans regarding flight activity at our airports, and uses the Department’s Aviation Data Analytics Warehouse (ADAW) to produce a series of white papers with analyses that support the Aviation Department's business and strategic plans. The Unit produces analytical products used by all staff within the Department and at PANYNJ airport facilities. The successful candidate must be an excellent multi-tasker and willing to learn new concepts and techniques ranging from forecasting to database design to data visualizations. The job is data intensive and the candidate must be comfortable with numbers.

Reporting to the Manager of Strategic Analysis & Forecasting, the Senior Business Intelligence Analyst will play an integral part of the Strategic Analysis & Forecasting Team, specifically in the areas of passenger forecasting & reporting, strategic analysis, and business process improvement. The analyst will work with Aviation Strategy staff and others in the central office as well as our airport managers and staff in a wide variety of areas. On a given day, you may be working on validating and reconciling submitted airline passenger numbers, creating a new Power BI / Tableau report to respond to an ad-hoc data request, forecasting what aircraft fleet will be used over the next two decades, or designing a new Excel template to better improve our workflow.

Specific job areas and duties include, but are not limited to:

Passenger Forecasting, Data, & Reporting

  • Lead the Unit’s forecasting efforts for our airports, including passengers, cargo, operations, fleet, and fuel on a short-term and long-term basis by using econometric modeling and statistical/regression analyses
  • Research industry trends, airline carrier orders, and airport specific developments to include as input into the forecasting model
  • Support FAA review of updated forecasts including creating presentations to FAA and assisting with responses to specific FAA comments and the related report to be prepared by the Unit.
  • Manage the editing and distribution of the monthly and quarterly air traffic reports, ensuring data is accurate and verified against multiple data sources
  • Support the Unit’s Tableau and Power BI reporting, ensuring they are up to date and accurate

Business Process Improvement

  • Help redesign the monthly and quarterly air traffic reports to be more automated and visually enhanced
  • Create data templates in Microsoft Excel or another tool to enhance the Unit’s productivity and accuracy in producing its core deliverables, including forecasting products
  • Improve the Unit’s reporting capability to provide quick, timely, and accurate responses to requests by supporting automation of certain repetitive tasks through customized report development.

Strategic Analysis

  • Craft analytical stories to help support central office and/or Facility staff make informed decisions
  • Conduct analyses for white papers and other ad hoc investigations to support central office and/or Facility staff; find and analyze applicable data, draft associated descriptions, and summarize results in charts, tables, and other visualizations
  • Develop and use knowledge of data sources that can be used to enhance the analyses and products we produce, such as Dept of Transportation (DOT) T-100 / OD and Airline Schedule data
  • Work with other staff in Aviation Strategy to help with their analyses, that may relate to air service development or aviation policy

Finally, knowledge of and passion for transportation and specifically the aviation industry is a plus for this position.

 

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following combination of analytical, technical, and communication skills to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major in Transportation Engineering, Operations Research, Economics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • At least three (3) years of work experience in an aviation, transportation, data analytics, business intelligence, or related quantitative field

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major in Transportation Engineering, Operations Research, Economics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • Robust understanding of analytical methods (e.g. statistics, regression analysis, econometric forecasting) and three (3) additional years’ experience applying these methods to engineering, planning, operational, or other problems
  • Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft suite of tools, including advanced formulas in Excel such as VLOOKUP, index, match, etc.
  • Working knowledge of econometric software packages (e.g. EViews) where you have designed and calibrated multivariate models
  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g. Tableau, Microsoft Power BI) and relational databases (e.g. Oracle), specifically writing queries and/or creating reports to obtain and manipulate data
  • Familiarity with a variety of aviation data sources such as Dept of Transportation (DOT) T-100 / OD and Airline Schedule data
  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills, such as writing technical memos, developing PowerPoint decks for management, and ability to clearly and effectively communicate technical results and concepts to key decision makers using a narrative/story-telling approach
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively with multiple competing priorities
  • Comfortable digging deep into the technical details but also able to see the broad picture
  • Inquisitive mindset and the desire to understand why things are the way they are and how they may impact our business
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with all levels of internal and external stakeholders
  • Creative problem solver who thrives when presented with a challenge
