Responsibilities

This position is with the Office of Environmental and Energy Programs. The selected candidate will serve as Senior Sustainability Specialist (SSS) supporting the Sustainability Manager in the design, development and implementation of environmental sustainability and climate change related programs. The SSS will support the annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory and its associated verification efforts, support the climate action planning process, and voluntary external sustainability reporting including CDP, Airport Carbon Accreditation and EV100. The SSS will also lead or support the development and implementation of other sustainability related programs as they arise. The SSS will be instrumental in the design of strategic internal and external marketing materials as well as designing and coordinating sustainability related events.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for a highly competent, creative, driven candidate to interface with various Port Authority departments and learn about sustainability strategy, policy and management and the implementation and roll out of clean technology at the agency’s NY and NJ facilities.  The assignment will also aid the agency by advancing programs and promoting sustainability more broadly through targeted communications strategies, events and external reporting.

The SSS will be working with internal and external stakeholders as well as managing consultants.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to a range of environmental sustainability related initiatives ranging from research, policy design and review, and program development.
  • Supporting the annual GHG inventory and associated verification processes
  • Support the tracking and reporting of sustainability metrics: progress towards agency emission reduction goals, project-level GHG emission reduction, future agency emission projections
  • Designing and project managing sustainability related events on behalf of the agency including Earth Day, NYC Climate Week and other events across the year
  • Completing annual voluntary sustainability related reporting such as CDP, the Airport Carbon Accreditation, EV100 – help identify other reporting platforms that demonstrate the Agency’s climate and sustainability leadership
  • Producing customized and data centric performance reports regarding climate change and sustainability initiatives as required

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, engineering, policy or management with aptitude in project management, economics or data analytics and reporting. Advanced degree in environmental/sustainability policy or management, public administration, engineering, business or related field with aptitude in communications or data science preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working in environmental sustainability and climate change from a policy or management perspective – ideally the candidate would have some familiarity in areas such as waste management, air quality, sustainability in the built environment, circularity, and market-based emissions reduction strategies such as carbon offsetting and purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates.

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Demonstrated management and organizational experience, with the ability to coordinate and communicate complex sustainability topics with Port Authority leadership, line business and facility staff, stakeholders and contractors
  • Strong understanding of GHG emissions accounting standards with experience across heavy industry, transportation and infrastructure
  • Demonstrated quantitative and analytical skills, including performance measurement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with multiple stakeholders and sectors from private and public sectors
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make concise presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience in communications and marketing efforts as well as planning and coordination of events:
  • Knowledgeable about transportation related technologies and infrastructure
  • Experience in GHG accounting and data management and reporting.
  • Climate action and sustainability planning processes
  • Familiarity with current local, state, and federal environmental policy, and legislation a plus.
