Associate Materials Engineer

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief of Materials Engineering, and under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Physical Inspections and Testing, the Associate Materials Engineer will be responsible for conducting inspections, sampling and testing of Portland cement concrete and bituminous concrete, as well as, entering test data and preparing payment sheets for signature in support of the Port Authority’s Materials Engineering Unit. The position entails approximately 80% field work at facilities within the Port District and requires a thorough knowledge of ACI, ASTM and AASHTO standards.  Hands-on familiarity with inspection and testing procedures and equipment to perform Quality Acceptance inspections and testing is required.  Testing concrete cylinders for compressive strength in the laboratory will be required at times.  The candidate must be capable of performing construction materials research, condition surveys and must have good written and oral communication skills.

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or Technology
  • American Concrete Institute – Concrete Construction Special Inspector (CCSI) certification
  • American Concrete Institute – Concrete Field-Testing Technician Level I
  • American Concrete Institute – Concrete Strength Testing Technician Level I
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience inspecting and testing Portland cement concrete.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain security clearance (10-year background check) for restricted areas of work

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Proficient at entering test data into a database accurately and efficiently.
  • Proficient at the use of basic computer programs, such as Excel and Word.
  • Certification to perform bituminous concrete plant and field inspections and testing.
  • Certified Nuclear Density Technician
  • OSHA 10 and/or 30-hour safety training certification
