Summer Intern – PATH, Customer Relations

The Port Authority offers 12-week paid summer internships to students that provide the opportunity to work with knowledgeable and experienced professionals on assignments critical to operating, maintaining, and expanding the transportation infrastructure for one of the greatest economies in the world. 

Assignments include hands-on projects to cultivate technical, writing, communication and team-building skills. The diversity of our businesses creates a variety of opportunities for students to gain exposure to the work of a first-class public agency.

The PATH Department is looking for a summer intern to join their team in the Customer Relations team! Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with customer service communications, e.g., responding to customer e-mails, responding to social media posts and answering customer service telephone calls.
  • Assist staff with the PATH Performs! Art in Transit Program.
  • Attend and assist staff at meetings and at miscellaneous PATH special events.
  • Assist staff in managing “PATHursday” weekly customer service program, e.g., coordinate staff schedules, send calendar invites and prepare materials to facilitate staff at PATHursday booth.
  • Assist staff in conducting PATH station inspections on a quarterly basis.
  • Assist staff in conducting Quick Tap Surveys.
  • Create an inventory system for current PATH poster archives (hard copy and electronic).
  • Gather information for PATHNotes quarterly (seasonal) Newsletter and create draft of document in Microsoft Word.
  • Create copy and assist staff in selecting photos for PATH 2021 calendar.
  • Organize inventory in Customer Relations & Marketing Programs inventory room.
  • Assist with miscellaneous customer service initiatives.
  • Participate in customer outreach initiatives; including but not limited to distribution of materials containing PATH service information and potential shifts in stations.
  • Attend meetings and record meeting minutes.


  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate program for the upcoming Fall 2020 school semester.
  • We are seeking interns who are talented, driven and who have a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York/New Jersey region.

  • Successful candidates will be self-starters with excellent communication, research and applicable technical skills.


  • Basic Excel Skills.
  • Excellent communication and intrapersonal skills.
  • Desired Majors: Accounting, Finance, Business, Public AdministrationAccounting, Finance, Business, Public Administration.

About the Program

  • Interns have the opportunity to support their departments with critical projects such as analyzing regional demand data for our airports, conducting interview assessments, development of our annual budget, designing sustainability initiatives, and developing operational plans for retail development. 
  • On the job, learning is supported by networking sessions with senior management, intern meet and greets and facility tours; broadening your understanding of the agency.

Recruitment Timeline

  • Interview Process: The hiring department/unit conducts interviews in late January and the process will continue until offers are made to selected candidates (February-May).
  • Program Start Date: The Summer Internship Program is slated to begin May 28, 2020 and runs until mid-August.
