Responsibilities

The Operational Excellence Division (OE) is a team of industrial engineering-focused professionals within the agency’s Management and Budget Department. Utilizing disciplined problem-solving principles and tools, the team supports the agency’s budgetary functions by evaluating agency processes, functions, and resources. The team implements ongoing, continuous, and sustainable improvement within the agency, and ensures efficient alignment with corporate strategic priorities and key initiatives. As part of the Operational Excellence team, you will learn about the processes and operations across the various lines of business, providing you with an insight on the extensive opportunities for a long-term career at the Port Authority.  

What you’ll be doing...

The Staff Management Engineer is a key member of MBD’s Operational Excellence Division, and under the direction of the Assistant Manager of Operational Excellence, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and oversee industrial engineering projects of varying scope and complexity

  • Design processes and tools, utilizing engineering principles to optimize performance

  • Develop process improvements using methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma to improve productivity, effectiveness, efficiencies and customer service

  • Understand the agency’s operations to design effective organizational change

  • Develop and maintain continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing operational costs and minimizing operational waste

  • Analyze and improving current best practices & SOPs across the agency

  • Conduct ad hoc data analyses to support the budgetary and financial functions of the department

  • Interface with staff of all levels across the agency to find areas of improvement opportunities

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or Engineering Management Systems from an accredited College or University.

  • At least 2+ years of experience in roles related to industrial engineering or management consulting and requiring in-depth data analysis, leading complex cross-functional initiatives, and developing recommendations for senior management.

  • Working knowledge of Industrial Engineering principles, techniques and practices.

  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma tools and methodologies.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills with experience interacting with all levels of internal staff and peers from external organizations. 

  • Good knowledge of general management principles including project management.

  • Proficiency in computer applications including Excel, Power Point, Visio, and Word.

  • Ability to travel across various facilities in the NY/NJ area for 10%-15% of the time.

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or Engineering Management Systems.   

  • Certified Green Belt (or higher) in Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma certifications.

  • At least 3+ years of experience in roles related to industrial engineering or management consulting and requiring in-depth data analysis, leading complex cross-functional initiatives, and developing recommendations for senior management.

  • Experience:

    • As an Industrial Engineer in a non-manufacturing environment.

    • As a Management Consultant with a diverse project portfolio.

    • In continuous improvement initiatives, root cause analysis and project management.

  • Expertise

    • In managing projects with stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds.

    • With Port Authority’s operational structure.
