Assistant Supervisor - Communications

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor-Communications, the selected candidate will be responsible for supervising IBEW Craft and Supervisor employees in daily activities related to the installation, inspection, repair, maintenance, and testing of communications equipment throughout the PATH system.


Typical duties include but are not limited to: planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring, and supervising daily work for communication personnel in the areas of installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, test and repair of two-way voice radio components, public address systems, tunnel and station telephone systems, control center intercom systems, CCTV and digital recording systems, PATHVision and other passenger information display systems, SONET data network and digital communications equipment , alarm and security systems, and related cabling; directing Communications Foremen to assign daily work tasks; developing and directing routines in preventive and corrective maintenance; performing field inspections of equipment; instructing subordinates; preparing reports and other documents; requesting coverage for other jobs ordering materials, supplies, and tools; interacting with other Divisions, consultants, suppliers, and contractors; responding to incidents, emergencies, and weather conditions; and performing other duties as assigned. May be designated to represent the Supervisor-Communications in his absence.

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Must possess a four-year standard or vocational high school or equivalency diploma from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of five years continuous full-time paid experience required in the maintenance, installation, or engineering of communications system.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of PATH communications systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the PATH Book of Rules and the IBEW contract.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a technical professional workforce.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, understand and interpret circuit diagrams, wiring schematics, and data.
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative abilities.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge of personal computer applications in MS Office Programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical/electronic test instruments and procedures.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels and with outside consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Demonstrated decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Physical ability to climb and work at heights, and possess an unrestricted sense of sight, smell, and hearing.
  • Color acuity is necessary to correctly identify wires and distinguished basic colors such as red, orange, yellow, green and blue.
  • Valid driver license required.

About The Port Authority

The Port Authority Trans Hudson Corporation (PATH), an FRA-regulated commuter railroad, is the primary transit link between Manhattan and New Jersey communities and suburban commuter railroads.  Carrying over 75 million passengers per year, PATH trains run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, one of the few 24-hour systems in the world.  Since the early 20th Century, PATH and its predecessor, the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad, have carried passengers between New Jersey and points in Midtown and Lower Manhattan, serving as a key link in the regions transportation network and as a catalyst for continued residential, commercial and employment growth.

PATH operates 24 hours per day/7 days per week/365 days per year.  Employees are required to work weekends, holidays, atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts) and during inclement weather conditions. Incumbents may be subjected to mandatory overtime at the beginning or end of their scheduled tour, or on their days off.  A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH’s unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods.  Working conditions will be challenging, including but not limited to inclement weather, direct contact with the public, in tunnel and outside areas during active train service, and an industrial environment.
