Responsibilities

This position is a part of the Railroad Retirement System.

Reporting to the Manager of Technical Services of the PATH Power Signals & Communications (PS&C) Division, the Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the review, organization, and commenting of electrical engineering studies, contract drawings, technical specifications. The Sr. Electrical Engineer shall evaluate project scopes, develop design criteria, project schedules, provide technical direction and guidance to facility staff and other PA personnel in matters related to electrical engineering.  They shall also lead project teams in the preparation of electrical engineering designs including preparation of request for purchase/requisition procurement documents, bid documents, project coordination, schedule reporting, budget reporting and briefing senior staff.

Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare preliminary and detailed estimates, design criteria for new construction of electrical projects and design for the alteration of existing structures and utility systems. Review criteria including tolerances, dimensions, shapes and sizes, and determines the properties required in materials and feasible construction methods.  Prepare technical specifications and drawings for PATH Capital & Operating program projects performed by facility forces.
  • Develop of preliminary conceptual design work and planning for Capital Projects and Major Work Programs.
  • Perform engineering design review, including technical analysis and associated economic studies and make recommendations based on the needs of the PATH PS&C Division.
  • Ensure technical integrity, safety, efficient operation, maintainability and sound economics of the projects.
  • Ensure that projects are coordinated with other disciplines and PATH divisions to ensure minimal impact to daily operations.
  • Maintain knowledge of State-of-the-Art technology and equipment such as power distribution systems, electromechanical & microprocessor based relays, specialized systems such as Lighting, Fire, Security, UPS, variable speed drives, fiber optics, etc.
  • Ensure that PATH Electrical Substations and Station distribution are designed in accordance with the most advance and compatible technology available for PATH operations.
  • Participate in field commissioning, factory acceptance testing, testing including startup and troubleshooting of Electrical/Electronic systems. Ensure technical integrity, contract compliance safety, efficient operation, maintainability, and minimum downtime of the systems.
  • Ensure facility maintained drawings and records are updated as changes occur on the 650VDC Third Rail Distribution, Key Interlock Systems, 27KV Distribution, 15KV Distribution, 480V Distribution, Station Power Distribution, Intertripping Wiring Diagrams and others

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Supervisory Experience (minimum 2 years): role in the design, installation, integration, testing, and/or maintenance of electrical distribution systems and/or electrical substations.
  • Electrical Engineering Design / Construction / Substation Operations Experience (minimum 10 years) in the direct involvement of the design, installation, integration, testing, and/or maintenance of Electrical Power Distribution Systems from 27KV AC to 208/120V AC Systems and DC Traction Power Systems (650VDC).

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Experience in a broad range of Electrical Equipment, styles and vintages.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies in the field, providing technical guidance to diagnose the problem or issue and determine steps for resolution of the issue to maintain operations of the PATH Train System.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and isolate complex system level problems.
  • Knowledge of current technology trends, industry practices, standards and codes.  Demonstrated and working knowledge of electrical codes and standards.
  • Experience in electrical system design, overhead and underground medium voltage distribution systems, low voltage power distribution systems, electric motors and controls, lighting, DC Traction Power systems.
  • Experience in performing electrical calculations such as equipment sizing, short circuit and coordination studies, voltage drop and load studies, etc.
  • Proficiency in preparing one-line diagrams, control drawings, equipment layouts, plans, and detailed operation drawings for operations and maintenance tasks
  • Ability to effectively interface with internal staff, customers, partners, and vendors.
  • Skilled in problem analysis and resolution as well as project management.
  • Experience in DC Traction Power Systems, Design, Operation & Maintenance, and Protection
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of New York or New Jersey
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in previous work assignments.
  • Excellent oral and written communications and presentation skills.

PATH operates 24 hours per day/7 days per week/365 days per year.  Employees are required to work weekends, holidays, atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts) and during inclement weather conditions. Incumbents may be subjected to mandatory overtime at the beginning or end of their scheduled tour, or on their days off.  A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH’s unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods.  Working conditions will be challenging, including but not limited to inclement weather, direct contact with the public, in tunnel and outside areas during active train service, and an industrial environment.
