Structural Maintenance Mechanic

Responsibilities

The Structural Maintenance Mechanic performs journey-level repair and construction work on buildings, warehouses, storage tanks, towers, piers and fenders.

Structural Maintenance Mechanics will perform the following duties:

  • Carpentry
  • Masonry
  • Metal burning/welding
  • Painting
  • Paving
  • Roofing
  • Work at heights from ladders, scaffolds and stages
  • Prepare, install, and dismantle rigging equipment and safety nets

The successful candidate will work in limited access areas and/or at elevated heights on bridge and tower structures, tunnels, buildings, and all interior or exterior structural fabrications.

Shifts:  Structural Maintenance Mechanics work a 40-hour week, which includes working rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. 

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Three years full-time paid work experience in the general or heavy structural maintenance fields
  • Valid driver license with the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B permit before the first day of work. Selected candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check and will be asked to provide copies of the required licenses for verification.

Compensation & Benefits

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers a competitive salary, an outstanding benefits package and a professional environment that supports development and recognizes achievement.

Starting Salary:  $22.46 per hour ($46,722), with annual step increases up to $34.53 per hour ($71,838) (subject to collective bargaining agreement). This position is 40 hours per week with potential overtime.

Testing

Written Test: Selected qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam designed to measure a candidate's knowledge in areas such as:

  • Carpentry
  • Metal Working
  • Painting
  • Masonry
  • Welding and Burning
  • Proper selection and use of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment related to these trades
  • Blueprints and Diagrams
  • Scaffolding
  • Rigging
  • Trade Math
  • Relevant Safety procedures

Qualifying Height Test:  A qualifying height test will measure the candidate's ability to walk and simulate working at heights.

Performance Test:  The performance test may measure the candidate's ability to perform work activities such as:

  • Scaffolding and Rigging
  • Metal fabrication using oxyacetylene Burning/Welding equipment
  • Carpentry
  • Flooring
  • Masonry and Painting activities relevant to the trade

The written test for this evaluation will be held on a date to be determined.  Candidates who are successful on the written test will be notified to appear for a Qualifying Height Test.  Candidates who are successful on both the written test and Qualifying Height Test will be notified to appear for the performance test.  Only candidates who are successful on the written and height tests will be invited to the performance test.
