Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Signal Supervisor, Signal Repairman II or Signal Repairman I, the Assistant Signal Repairman performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled duties and
assists skilled employees in the installation, construction, testing, maintenance and repair of signal equipment and other supporting equipment throughout the PATH system. The Assistant
Signal Repairman is an entry level position, as covered by the agreement between PATH and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen.


Assistant Signal Repairmen do not participate in the Signal Training Program and are not considered for a promotion within the Signal Division unless they have been accepted into and
successfully complete a future Signal Training Program.

The Assistant Signal Repairman will assist higher rated Signal Division employees in:

  • Cleaning, painting, lubricating, and general maintenance of Signal equipment;
  • Digging, pulling, and climbing in the installation of Signal equipment;
  • Assisting the performance of FRA testing;
  • Assisting with trouble shooting; and Heavy duty "gunk tank" cleaning of equipment in the Signal Shop, requiring the use of a respirator and safety apparel.

NOTE: The foregoing is not exclusive and is not meant to describe all those duties which may be assigned to an Assistant Signal Repairman pursuant to the agreement between PATH
and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen.

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

Education: High School or Equivalency Diploma is required.

Experience:  1 to 2 years of experience performing semi-skilled duties in the installation, construction, test, maintenance, and/or semi-repair of mechanical/electrical equipment is desired,
but not required.

License:   Must possess a valid Driver's License

Physical Requirements: Considerable digging, climbing ladders, climbing on and off trains from ground level, pulling cable, lifting heavy items such as train stops that would require more than one person to lift, operating jackhammers, and walking in ballast. Must be able to distinguish colors.

Working Conditions: Rail rapid transit operation with energized third rail power; outdoors, all weather conditions; tunnel environment, viaducts and bridges. The use of a respirator is required. Use of safety vests, safety shoes and work gloves while on or near the tracks is mandatory.

Written Examination: Candidates will be administered a series of written tests designed to measure their aptitude in such areas as: math, reading comprehension, and mechanical ability.


Interview: The interview will consist of technical questions designed to measure such factors as job related skills, interest in the position and personal qualifications for this position.

Compensation & Benefits

An evaluation will be held to establish an eligible roster for the position of Assistant Signal Repairman in the Signal Division. The starting salary for this position is between $23.19 to $25.66 per hour.

Incumbents may be subjected to mandatory overtime at the beginning or end of their scheduled tour, or on their days off.  A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH’s unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods.  Working conditions will be challenging, including but not limited to inclement weather, direct contact with the public, in tunnel and outside areas during active train service, and an industrial environment.
