Responsibilities

If you know the maritime industry, then you know that the Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the biggest players in the game. We are the largest port on the East Coast, a critical gateway that provides millions of people with the things they need, from everyday commodities like orange juice, to the steel of the World Trade Center.

What you may not know is that the Port Authority has an Operations Fellows Program, an opportunity for passionate individuals to help shape the legacy of our transportation network.  As part of this program, we are looking for maritime professionals to join our Port team in its mission to enhance the operations and infrastructure of the New York-New Jersey seaports.  Over the last 95 years, the Port of New York and New Jersey has been at the forefront of the maritime industry.  This is your chance to join us as we prepare for the next century.

The Operations Fellows program within the Port Department is a program for individuals with an interest in building a career in maritime industry and an aspiration to manage people in the future.  This program is a two-year rotational experience designed to provide individuals with exposure to a number of areas of port, which may include the following:

  • Leasing & Property Development
  • Port Rail Program
  • Project Management
  • Business Development and Customer Relations
  • Port Security Operations

In addition to the rotational assignments in the Port Department, individuals will be able to learn more about the overall agency through executive networking sessions and facility tours in other areas of the Port Authority. They will also be exposed to leadership development opportunities through customized training and workshops, individual coaching, and mentoring to prepare them to become future leaders who will run the Port Authority’s critical operations.  Upon successful completion of the program, Operations Fellows will be considered for key positions within the Port Department.

Operations Fellows will be selected based on academic achievement, analytical and communication skills, and work experience.  The selection process for the Program is highly rigorous and consists of multiple rounds of interviews, including a qualitative interview, a competency-based panel interview, and multiple assessment exercises.
 

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a maritime, transportation, supply chain management or related field
  • Demonstrated interest in the maritime field through a job, an internship, or other related experience (coast guard, military, transportation, etc.)

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Master’s degree
  • 1-2 years of relevant work experience
  • Interest in working in the “front line” of an operation
  • Clear interest in operations or the maritime industry with a desire to become a people-leader
  • Clear interest in public service
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills
  • Demonstrated customer service and political acumen skills
  • Able to work effectively in multiple units and to interface with executive and union staff
  • Strong presence, excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
