Reporting to the Chief of Materials Engineering and under the direct supervision of the Senior Engineer of Materials, the candidate will be responsible for the supervision of inspection and testing of structural steel welding, bolting and nondestructive testing of welds for major capital program projects; and oversight of metallurgical investigations.

The selected candidate will be responsible for supervising a staff of engineers, inspectors and technicians in the inspection and testing of structural steel welding, bolting and nondestructive testing of welds in the field and at fabrication shops.  In addition, reviewing contractor submittals for structural steel welding and bolting work.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of AWS D1.1 and D1.5 codes and hands-on familiarity with welding procedures.
  • Interpreting and enforcing the American Welding Society (AWS) standards and structural steel welding, bolting and nondestructive testing of welds industry standards.
  • Coordinating all inspection and testing of structural steel welding, bolting and nondestructive testing of welds for field work.
  • Generating and maintaining punch lists and nonconformance reports.
  • Reviewing and approving testing and inspection reports performed by staff and/or contractors.
  • Reviewing and approving invoices provided by consultants.
  • Reviewing contractor submittals and requests for information for conformance with contract documents.
  • Development and oversight of metallurgical investigation requests.
  • Attending and participating in preconstruction meetings for structural steel.


Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • A minimum of (10) ten years of experience in the testing and inspection of structural steel welding, bolting and nondestructive testing of welds.
  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering (structural/civil) from an accredited college or university.
  • Must have the following credentials:  AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level II certification for UT, MT and PT.
  • Certified with the International Code Council (ICC) as a structural steel and bolting special inspector.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.



Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • The ability to read, interpret and enforce contract drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and coordinating major projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and administer testing, inspection, and quality assurance programs.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Must be able to obtain security clearances for restricted areas.
  • A Professional Engineer’s license is desirable.
