Responsibilities

We are currently seeking a Senior Fire Protection Engineer to join our Agency Safety Management - Safety Risk Management group.

Under the direction of the Manager - Safety Risk Management, the selected candidate will be responsible for performing technical duties focused on maintaining a fire safe environment for Port Authority (PA) and PATH employees, tenants, and patrons; performing field risk assessments of physical conditions and fire protection systems relevant to occupancy and construction at all PA and PATH facilities; conducting, reviewing or witnessing annual and acceptance tests of fixed fire protection systems and equipment; reviewing and commenting on plans and specifications for tenant, PA and PATH areas; participating in final acceptance inspections to assure conformance with established codes and approved architectural and engineering documents; writing evaluation reports that includes recommendations for corrective actions if necessary; participating in special technical investigations or projects;  and performing and executing the duties of a fire protection engineer that protects the people working and traveling through PA and PATH properties and the people of the New York – New Jersey Region that we serve.

The position requires frequent travel, in all types of weather, to all Port Authority facilities and working hours that include early morning, late evening and weekend shifts to respond to emergencies and safety related events.  The Agency Safety Management group also supports the Port Authority Emergency Operations Center (PAEOC) and because of this organizational responsibility when the PAEOC is activated there is a requirement for this position to work twelve hour shifts during the day and overnight depending on circumstances.

The successful candidate will also be subject to a comprehensive background check, must pass a fingerprint based criminal history records check (49 CFR 1542.209) in order to obtain an airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) credential.  The candidate must be able to maintain SIDA credentials throughout your employment in this position. Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in fire protection engineering
  • Working familiarity with applicable local, state and national fire protection and life safety codes
  • Working familiarity with Safety Management Systems and the working relationship between Safety Policy, Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance and Safety Training, Promotion and Programs
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to successfully pass all background checks and obtain and maintain clearance for required secure access credentials

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct field evaluations and make technical recommendations based on findings
  • Excellent problem analysis, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Demonstrated experience with project management
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, multi task and work independently to complete tasks
  • Strong, proven, written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • NYS Code Enforcement Official or NJ State Fire Official Certification
  • State/National Fire Inspector I Certification
  • OSHA 10 Certification
  • National Institute for Certification In Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level-1 Fire Alarm Systems Certification
