The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is seeking a qualified Senior Safety Engineer to join our Agency Safety Management division.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has established an Agency Safety Management division, which is in alignment with the requirements of federal legislation focused upon overall improvement of operational safety.
The Senior Safety Engineer, which is in the Safety Risk Management group, is responsible for ensuring the safety of the people the Port Authority and PATH serves in the New York and New Jersey region, tenants at Port Authority properties and employees of the Port Authority and all our subsidiary operations.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
safety evaluations at Port Authority facilities, which includes inspection, documentation, enforcement and correction
development and tracking of corrective and preventative actions
perform Risk Assessments at Port Authority locations
fully utilize safety management software and technology for accident trending and safety metric generation
conduct special investigations and prepare executive briefings
provide emergency evacuation training for Port Authority employees
provide technical safety support to other Port Authority and PATH personnel as required
represent Safety Risk Management on facility Safety Committees and special projects as assigned
The position requires frequent travel, in all types of weather, to all Port Authority facilities and working hours that include early morning, late evening and weekend shifts to respond to emergencies and safety related events. The Agency Safety Management group also supports the Port Authority Emergency Operations Center (PAEOC) and because of this organizational responsibility, when the PAEOC is activated there is a requirement for this position to work twelve hour shifts during the day and overnight depending on circumstances.
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:
Minimum 2-3 years of safety experience
Knowledge of and practical use of Safety Management System (SMS) in transportation system environments
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license
The successful candidate will also be subject to a comprehensive background check, must pass a fingerprint based criminal history records check (49 CFR 1542.209) in order to obtain an airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) credential. The candidate must be able to maintain SIDA credentials throughout your employment in this position. Ideal candidates will present the following profile:
Practical safety experience
Experience responding to emergencies
Working knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations
Ability to interpret regulations and prepare safety programs to ensure compliance with regulations
Demonstrated experience in problem solving and project management
Demonstrated ability to take initiative, multi task and work independently to complete tasks
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
