The Port Authority of NY & NJ is seeking experienced journey-level AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS to fill positions in our various NY/NJ facilities.

The Automotive Mechanic - Heavy Vehicle is responsible for inspection and modification, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of complex automotive and special equipment, and technically involved auxiliary and control systems. Work is highly specialized in nature and requires an extensive and sound knowledge of automotive technology and practical analyses and skill. Work is performed under circumstances requiring unusual techniques and exceptional judgment.

  • Starting Salary:  $30.68 hourly.  Automotive Mechanics are eligible for annual step increases up to an annual salary of $82,467.58 (subject to collective bargaining agreement).

  • Automotive Mechanics work at our various NY/NJ facilities, such as JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Central Automotive Shop (Jersey City, NJ).

  • Automotive Mechanics work a 40-hour week, which includes rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime as needed, and during inclement weather and emergencies.


Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution

  • Three years’ journey-level experience in performing skilled automotive work involving inspection, diagnosis, modification, maintenance, and repair on complex automotive and other special equipment

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • New York State and/or New Jersey State Emissions Inspector License (selected applicants without this license must obtain within six months of employment)

  • Applicants must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the Air Brakes endorsement or higher. Applicants without a Class B CDL must obtain a Class B CDL Permit with endorsement before their first day of work, and will be required to obtain a Class B CDL with one endorsement within three months of employment.

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master certified as an Automobile Technician, Truck Technician and/or Truck Equipment Technician

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified in Automobile Technician, Advanced Engine Performance Specialist, Medium/Heavy Truck Technician and Medium/Heavy Vehicle Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist, and/or Compressed Natural Gas Technician

Selected qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a written test, which will measure the candidate’s basic knowledge in areas such as Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems, Engine Performance, Drivability and Emissions, Accessories; Prints, Schematics, and Diagrams; Power Transmission, Lubrication, Fuel Systems, Cooling and Heating Systems, Mechanical Maintenance and Equipment Installation, Shop Machines, Tools, Materials, and Equipment, Internal Combustion Engines (Diesel and Gasoline), Inspection, Recordkeeping and Mathematics; Pneumatics, Pumps, Piping, Hydraulics, and Safety.

Candidates who qualify on the written exam will be eligible to be considered for the next step in the evaluation process, a practical exam. The practical exam will measure a candidate's knowledge in areas such as mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and/or electrical/electronic inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.


Selected candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check and medical and may be asked to provide copies of the required licenses for verification.
