Responsibilities

TB&T is seeking career-minded transportation operations professionals to participate in an operations supervisory development program.  This development program will consist of a series of classroom training, on-the-job training, job shadowing and mentoring in order to provide the foundation of knowledge and skills needed to become Field Operations Supervisors, and also prepare for future senior management roles to lead the operations of a bridge or tunnel facility within TB&T. 

Candidates selected to join the four (4) month program will rotate between the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel and George Washington Bridge and Bus Station.  At the conclusion of the program, candidates will have gained the critical experiences and knowledge to be a successful Field Operations Supervisor at the Port Authority, and will be assigned in that capacity at one of the Port Authority bridges and tunnels.

  • Candidates must be willing to rotate through TB&T facilities including the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel and George Washington Bridge (GWB).
  • Candidates must be willing to work rotating tour assignments including days, nights, weekends and holidays, 8-hour tours and 12-hour tours.
  • Selected candidates will be regularly assessed throughout the program including written exams and field evaluations. 
  • The Field Operations Supervisor position is a unionized position.

Under the supervision of the Tour Manager, the selected candidate will be responsible for directly supervising Port Authority Security Guards and emergency first-responders in the ranks of facility Tunnel & Bridge Agents and Senior Tunnel & Bridge Agents.  Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising, appraising, developing, and overseeing subordinate personnel in conducting facility operations, including the activities of the emergency garage staff's optimal utilization of emergency garage equipment and vehicles; activities at the facility communications desk; and the activities of security guard staff to ensure that activity associated with vent buildings and perimeter areas are appropriately monitored and documented. 
  • Acting as the on-scene coordinator at emergency incidents, reporting to the Tour Manager, to ensure the quick response of emergency garage personnel to incidents and disabled vehicles, safety of our staff and customers, efficient handling and the expedient return to normal operations, and minimal customer service disruptions.
  • Conducting roadway and toll plaza inspections affecting customer and employee safety to ensure proper operating procedures are followed. 
  • Performing detail work related to tolls, security guard, emergency garage functions, and communication desk responsibilities to improve present practices and meet new requirements.
  • Assisting in the planning of facility operations to ensure optimum utilization of human resources, and helping analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of work practices. 
  • Assisting the Tour Manager in the coordination of construction projects. 
  • Participating in the administrative functions in the Operations Unit. 
  • Recommending acquisition of equipment, materials, and uniforms to improve operation at the facility. 
  • Preparing reports for disciplinary actions, critical incidents, and other occurrences. 

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • A Bachelors Degree in Operations Management, Public Administration, Emergency Management, Facility Management or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Must have three (3) years full-time paid work experience working in operations, transportation, traffic management, emergency management, manufacturing, facilities management, logistics and other related fields or military experience
  • Must have one (1) year of full-time paid supervisory experience working in operations, transportation, traffic management, emergency management, manufacturing, or facilities management or logistics or other related fields or military experience
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Desired

Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • Knowledge of union agreements and labor management processes. 
  • Knowledge of tolls/vehicular operations and traffic management.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and direct subordinate staff in performance of varied operations programs. 
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures.
  • Proficiency in the use of  computer programs, including Microsoft’s Office suite and other enterprise systems.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a represented position subject to collective bargaining agreement. The starting salary is $59,592, rising to $74,672 after six years. This position is overtime eligible, and comes with a comprehensive and competitive health insurance, pension, and benefit package.
