Security Guards are responsible for the safety and protection of the PA facilities and its assets. They interact with the traveling public, contract staff, employees and outside agencies’ staff with courtesy and professionalism. Working under close supervision, the Security Guard duties include but are not limited to:

  • Observes activity at a particular post and reports any unusual activities to the supervisor.

  • Security Guards perform routine monitoring, reporting duties, and follow specific guidelines for observing and reporting incidents.

  • Responsible to report malfunctions of equipment that may impact the security or well-being of the facility to supervisor and/or facility management.

  • Verify pedestrian and vehicle authorization for access through an assigned post and may be required to monitor CCTVs or other similar equipment and report irregularities as observed.

  • Perform other related duties, as required.

This is a 24-hour, 7 days-a-week operation that will involve working rotating shifts and/or irregular shifts, holidays and overtime if necessary.

Port Authority’s Security Guards are assigned to either the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel ventilation facility.


Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution

  • Valid Driver's License.

  • Minimum of three (3) years full time work experience in a security role or public safety.

  • Physical Requirements:

    • Not less than 20-40 corrected vision in each eye

    • No color confusion or impairment color and depth perception


Ideal candidates will present the following profile:

  • College credits from an accredited institution of higher learning in Criminal Justice -or- Police Science at the equivalent rate of 32 credits per year

  • Experience dealing traveling public or in a transportation, high traffic, emergency management role.

The successful candidate will enjoy a starting salary of $15.63 hourly (subject to collective bargaining agreement).

Security Guards are eligible for a comprehensive health benefits package and participation in the New York State and Local Employee’s Retirement System (NYSLERS).  Security Guards are also eligible for other benefits, such as paid time off and tuition assistance (subject to the collective bargaining agreement

Selected qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a written exam. Security Guard written exam is designed to assess your abilities in areas such as: Applying Information/Deductive Reasoning; Numeric Facility; Mathematical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension.


Candidates who qualify on the written exam will be eligible to be considered for the next step in the evaluation process, an oral interview.  The oral interview is designed to measure candidate’s work experience, skill/job fit and ability in the areas such as: Situational Judgment; Customer Service, Understanding and following instructions; Ability to accurately and expeditiously determine toll rates and provide correct change.
